The flagpole memorial to John A Phillips, a New Trier graduate who died in the 1983 bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, will be rededicated in his memory on Veteran’s Day. Sgt. Phillips was born on April 22, 1960, and died at age 23 on October 22, 1983. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery, and is the last resident of Wilmette to have lost his life in the service of his country overseas.
